Financial Statements Competition

We are trying to collect every financial statement that any public body in Canada has ever published. This includes governments, agencies, cities, towns, villages, school boards, libraries, counties, regional districts, universities; if a body publishes a financial statement following the Public Sector Accounting Standards we want their statements!

If published online, these are usually published as PDFs. Sometimes these are only available offline. These documents contain some of the highest quality data that our governments produce because they are audited annually by an accountant that puts their reputation and livelihood on the line to say that it is an accurate representation of the body's finances.

The sankey diagram that Canada Spends makes shows how governments raise money and how they spend money. We want every public body in Canada to have one. We also want to do comparisons across similar bodies.

But we need your help to collect all these documents!

Steps:

  1. Sign in to the competition portal with Discord
  2. Become a Build Canada member if you haven't already (it's easy and free!)
  3. Find a body you want to find financial statements for.
  4. We've imported all the census subdivisions already. Some of these are statistical and do not actually exist as public bodies. Please mark these if you find them!
  5. Agencies, school boards, libraries and other bodies are not prepopulated. You can add new bodies in bulk with a CSV upload if you find a list of them.
  6. Go download all available statements, enter the body's url and their page with a list of all their statements (where you found them)
  7. Upload those documents under that body's page.
  8. For Alberta please also grab the tax rate bylaw. This portal has all the documents for each municipality in the province.

Prizes!!!
